Arthritis

Magnetic Mobility bracelets use 4in1 elements to reduce the chances of Arthritis pain limiting your day.

What is arthritis?

Arthritis is a collection of conditions affecting your joints and other tissues. It causes pain, restricts mobility, and often diminishes your quality of life.

Usually there is swelling and tenderness of one or more of your joints. This causes joint pain and stiffness, which typically worsens with age.

There are many types of Arthritis:

  • Osteoarthritis
  • Rheumatoid Arthritis
  • Ankylosing spondylitis
  • Gout
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Sjogren's syndrome
  • Polymyalgia Rheumatica
  • Psoriatic Arthritis
  • Raynauds

What causes arthritis?

As there are many different types of Arthritis there is no one cause. However arthritis may be attributed to:

  • Injury
  • Infections
  • Problems with your immune system
  • Genetic predisposition (family history)
  • Age
  • Weight

Osteoarthritis can be caused by normal wear and tear as you age. Infection or injury to joints can speed up this process and break down the vital cartilage in your joints.

Rheumatoid arthritis can occur when your body's own immune system attacks the soft tissue in your joints called the synovium. When the synovium is destroyed it can no longer make the fluid that protects your joints, causing them to rub against each other and cause pain and swelling.

Symptoms of arthritis

The word ‘arthritis’ comes from the Greek words: ‘arth’ and ‘itis.’ ‘Arth’ means joint and ‘itis’ means inflammation.

Common symptoms of arthritis usually involve your joints. As there are many different types of arthritis, there are varying symptoms. However, the most common symptoms may include:

  • Pain
  • Stiffness
  • Decreased range of motion - not being able to move as well as you used too
  • Swelling or redness around your joints

Symptoms may occur in more than one joint. Stiffness and pain may worsen with inactivity and often improve with physical activity.

Other symptoms that may occur include:

  • Fever
  • Weight loss
  • Fatigue

How arthritis can affect you

Arthritis affects about 915,000 people in Ireland. People of all ages can suffer with it. It cannot be cured, but there is much you can do to help yourself and live a better quality of life.

Arthritis can often make you feel as if it’s taking the things you enjoy most away from you. Little things like going for a walk can become a huge task.

For most people, pain is the worst symptom. Everyone feels pain differently, and that makes your arthritis experience very individual to you. You may not always have pain in the affected joint, you may have pain in your knee, even though you have arthritis of the hip. This is called referred pain. This can be difficult to explain to other people and can often cause you frustration. Frustration is common among people with arthritis.

Although there is, as yet no known cure for most types of arthritis, there is a lot that can be done to help. Pain can usually be controlled, and stiffness and inflammation can be relieved. There is a lot you can do yourself to take control of your arthritis.
